Ice Cream Makers – General Information

Ever gotten the urge for ice cream and not had any in the freezer? An ice cream maker might be just the thing to invest in. Most of the models today are electric; there are a couple still available with hand-crank capabilities. Some even come with both options. Ice cream used to be made with salt, ice, or chemicals, but today those aren’t needed with all ice cream makers. There are a couple of commonly used materials for construction of these handy machines; wood or steel. The wood is generally a bucket shape, made of pine, and the steel is stainless to avoid rusting. Many are hand wash only, but a few come with dishwasher safe parts.

Many models don’t only make ice cream; they are also able to make frozen yogurt, sorbet, sherbet, frozen desserts or drinks. Making drinks usually takes less time than ice cream; an average of 25 minutes is needed for frozen beverages. Almost all machines come with a recipe book of some sort. Higher end models tend to have little added perks, such as a viewing window to watch ice cream be made, or a base for sundae bowls to sit on.

There is even a machine that makes 8 – 10 cones at a time and has a cone holder attached to it for convenience. This is especially handy for birthday parties or family gatherings.

The prices run anywhere from 40 to 260 dollars and machines can produce from 1. 5 quarts to as much as 6 quarts, depending on size.

Some ice cream makers take 10 to 20 minutes, while others may take up to 60 minutes to produce a batch of ice cream. Various machines come with containers to store ice cream in after it is made. There are some with a removable inner canister that goes right into the freezer with a plastic lid; others have a double insulated freezer bowl. Warranties for ice cream makers depend on the company. They can range from a 1 yr warranty to a 5 yr warranty.
